Messrs. Savage and Martin were given to understand that they would have an allowance in lieu of quarters, and that within this understanding was the acceptance of their posts.
I did not speak to them between 17 Dec. (when I went on leave) and 31 Dec. (when I relieved). I saw them once since afterwards and had seen Mr. Sarge before. I certainly did not give them to understand that they would get either free quarters or an allowance in lieu of them.
